Reentry Council to meet January 20

January 18, 2017

The Mississippi Reentry Council will meet at 2 p.m. Jan. 20 in the Training Room at the Gartin Justice Building at 450 High Street in Jackson.

The meeting is expected to include an update on a proposal to hire Young People in Recovery, a nonprofit organization, to work toward implementing a reentry program for inmates and former inmates on probation. YPR has proposed starting pilot sites in which YPR staff would identify local resources, train communities and build coalitions with the faith-based community.

U.S. District Judge Keith Starrett of Hattiesburg, chairman of the Reentry Council, said that he also expects discussion of proposed legislation.

The Reentry Council works to create effective strategies to assist former inmates in their return to society, reduce recidivism, provide ample funds for operating the state prison system and improve public safety.
